The Chief Executive Member of the KHADC, Pyniaid Sing Syiem, today assured a delegation of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) that the executive committee will not give its consent to the state or central government to explore or mine uranium within its jurisdiction.
“We also reminded the KSU that this EC and the council as a whole have not given its consent to the Union Ministry of Railways or state government to start with the construction of railway lines in the state,” he told the press.
The council is resolute on the need for “strong mechanisms” to protect the indigenous tribals before giving approval for the railways.
Relating the proposed amendment of the Sixth Schedule, Syiem said that the EC told the KSU that they will meet the state government to follow up with the documents that came from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on the matter and to give their suggestions.
On the Uniform Civil Code issue, he said that the EC has decided to convene a meeting on June 30 with legal experts to draft a letter that will be sent to the National Law Commission, which is seeking views and suggestions on opposition to implement the UCC under the jurisdiction of the council.
