Leader of the opposition Dr Mukul Sangma of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) made it clear today that he will not be rejoining the Congress Party.
The TMC chief was very clear that he has no intention of going back to the Grand Old Party, which he split from in 2021. The TMC has yet to really work in Meghalaya and Dr Sangma has seen his influence wane ever since. The opposition leader, however, did not rule out floating a new political party in the near future.
The former Chief Minister accused the Congress (which has just one MLA compared to the TMC’s four) of being hand in glove with the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), citing the alliance between the two in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.
When asked if Vincent Pala, the leader of the state Congress, is the main bone of contention, Dr Sangma said that it is not about an individual but he is fighting against the NPP and its ally the Congress.
Although he is adamant, rumours are only growing louder that Charles Pyngrope, his party colleague, will rejoin the Congress at some point. Pyngrope, the Nongthymmai MLA, is the only TMC legislator in Khasi-Jaintia Hills.
Asked if he will float his own political party, Dr Sangma said that he will not rule out that speculation.
