Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured that no person from Bangladesh would be allowed to enter the states of the North East including Meghalaya.
Shah gave this assurance to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma who met him in New Delhi today and briefed about the current situation at the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya.
Sangma was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong.
“Today we had a meeting with the Union home minister to review the overall situation along the border areas, keeping in mind the current situation in Bangladesh,” said Sangma.
“The Home Minister has assured that no individuals from Bangladesh will be allowed to enter north-eastern states. We discussed the current situation extensively, and I highlighted the need for even tighter security measures. The Home Minister agreed to look into this matter further,” Sangma said in a video statement.
Sangma revealed that Shah assured him of robust measures to prevent any unauthorised entry from Bangladesh.
The Union home minister also committed to considering additional security enhancements along the India-Bangladesh border, potentially involving the deployment of more security forces.
Sangma said that he briefed Shah about the night curfew imposed along the border to prevent attempts of illegal immigration and that the BSF was strictly monitoring the border along with the Army.
“The Meghalaya Police are also on high alert, and we have informed him that a night curfew has been imposed to further strengthen the overall security in the border zone,” the chief minister added.
Shah’s assurances come amid concerns over the political instability in Bangladesh, which has raised fears of potential spillover effects into India’s north-eastern states.
Meghalaya, which shares a 443-kilometer border with Bangladesh, has on August 5 imposed a night curfew along this stretch of the border as part of its efforts to control cross-border movements and maintain security. The Meghalaya police have been placed on high alert to monitor the situation closely.
Meanwhile, in view of the upcoming Independence Day and the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, BSF Inspector General Harbax Singh Dhillon today visited the border area to review the security scenario along the international border.
He also interacted with field comdrs & jawans to enhance border domination.
