Shillong, Oct 14: The North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) has demanded an immediate Executive Council (EC) meeting but which will not be led by under-fire Vice-Chancellor PS Shukla.
NEHUTA held a protest at the university’s Shillong campus today over the varsity administration’s “non-fulfillment” of long-pending issues.
Included among these are accusations that Shukla has continually interfered in the day-to-day affairs of NEHU, violating an agreement reached between NEHUTA, NEHUSU (the students’ union) and the EC members with the Union Ministry of Education team in May.
During the agitation, NEHUTA passed several resolutions, including the demand for an EC meeting under the chairmanship of the seniormost Pro Vice-Chancellor and not Shukla; appointment of a Dean in the School of Social Sciences, as per seniority by rotation; immediate conduct of the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) for all stages under the chairmanship of the Pro VC; and apprising the central government of Shukla’s alleged corruption in collusion with Pro VC of the Tura campus.
NEHUTA has accused Shukla of bypassing norms in the allocation of work to develop the Tura campus. However, the association has received blowback from several quarters in Garo Hills, who want the work to go ahead for the benefit of the students and other stakeholders in Tura.
Today’s meeting in Shillong was attended by 100 members, who unanimously supported the resolutions.
