There are nearly 10,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in Meghalaya, it was revealed at a World AIDS Day function here yesterday.
The exact figure is 9,589, which gives a prevalence rate of 0.43 percent, an above average race of incidence in the country.
Yesterday’s awareness programme, organised by the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society (MACS) under the theme, ‘Take the Right Path’, aimed to address the rising number of cases and combat the persistent stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS.
Despite years of awareness programmes, it is galling that only around one-sixth of the population, according to the National Family Health Survey 2021, possesses comprehensive knowledge of HIV/AIDS.
