The education system in Meghalaya, from the syllabus to the standard of school and colleges, needs an upgrade to help indigenous applicants clear the tough exams of the Union Public Service Commission and others.
This was stated by the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) education cell, which suggested that the Education Department implement the NCERT syllabus (apart from Modern Indian Languages) for students of the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) from Class 7 to help them correct some of the imbalances MBOSE students face when up against those of the central boards.
Precious few tribals from Meghalaya qualify as elite civil servants in administration, police or foreign service.
Meghalaya is thus staffed by several non-indigenous IAS officers, who, the HYC said, are misleading the less well educated state ministers.
The pressure group also suggested that the government provide scholarships for youth from weak economic backgrounds who want to attend UPSC coaching courses.
It also appealed for religious institutions already involved in education to open coaching centres.
