Shillong, May 5: The thumping wins for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the West Bengal and Assam state elections (the results of which were announced yesterday) will not necessarily translate into success in Meghalaya, cabinet minister and National People’s Party (NPP) member Wailadmiki Shylla said today.
Meghalaya will go to the polls again in 2028. Despite spending much money and effort, the BJP only has two seats in the 60-member Assembly.
“From what I can understand and see, the people still trust the NPP under the able leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. No one can deny the kind of development in the past few years under the leadership of the Chief Minister and both the Deputy Chief Ministers,” Shylla said. “I am fully confident that people will definitely be with us and give us the opportunity to serve them in the future.”
The Meghalaya BJP celebrated yesterday’s successes and confidently predicted that it would lead the next state government in 2028.
Asked about this, Shylla said that a BJP-led government is not impossible but it will be a challenge.
Even the two MLAs the saffron party has won their seats on the back of their personal capacity and connect with the voters, not because of the party.
