Shillong, May 5: The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) has urged the National People’s Party (NPP) to nominate Khasi Authors Society president Dr. DRL Nonglait for a Rajya Sabha seat rather than pursuing a ticket for the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election.
In a letter to the NPP State President, HITO said there are strategic benefits given the current political scenario, where the NPP commands a majority of MLA seats.
Referring to Dr. Nonglait as “an ideal candidate” HITO said he would have a substantial platform to advocate for significant issues like including the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
In terms of the Lok Sabha by-election, HITO suggested that the NPP prioritise candidates who have consistently demonstrated loyalty and organisational commitment to the party. It named Hamlet Dohling and Hima Shangpliang as candidates who have “consistently demonstrated their dedication to the NPP and its principles.”
