Shillong, May 14: Meghalaya witnessed a landmark event in cancer prevention with the successful thermal ablation treatment for HPV-related cervical pre-cancer.
Conducted at the DAE Cancer Wing of the Shillong Civil Hospital yesterday, this marks a significant advancement in the region’s healthcare system, especially valuable for women’s health.
The procedure was performed by a dedicated team of healthcare professionals, including a team of the Meghalaya Mission Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Project.
The patient, who had tested positive for HPV DNA genotype 11 on March 31, 2026, benefitted from timely clinical evaluation and assessment. Following counselling, she underwent thermal ablation.
This not only underscores the capacity of Meghalaya’s public health institutions to detect and treat cervical lesions early but also exemplifies the growing availability of critical treatments that were previously inaccessible in government healthcare settings.
A government statement said that the achievement represents more than just a successful procedure; it signals the start of a more robust fight against cervical cancer in Meghalaya.
It paves the way for wider implementation of HPV screening and treatment, increased training for healthcare professionals, and greater awareness about cervical cancer screening.
As thermal ablators will soon become available in all district hospitals, the focus is on prevention, early detection, and accessible health care for all women in the state. Together, these initiatives will transform the landscape of cancer prevention and treatment, reflecting the hope and dedication of a community united for health, the statement added.
