Acting on a complaint of the Khasi Students Union (KSU), Laban circle the MeECL today disconnected power to settlers at the Maxwelton Estate.
The KSU has dubbed the residents there as illegal settlers and claimed of also being involved in power theft.
The KSU said that officials discovered that the settlers have tampered with the electrical meter and distribute power illegally to several others.
“There are 27 houses with power meters and electricity was illegally distributed to about 50 of them,” the KSU said.
Meanwhile, the union has also demanded the Shillong Municipal Board to remove all cowsheds illegally raised by the settlers.
The Maxwelton Estate is close to the temporary Assembly building in Rilbong. The KSU determined to seek the removal of the settlers had also constructed a house as mark of protest against government inaction.
It may be mentioned that Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong had said that an ongoing court case has to be completed before any movement of settlers can take place.
