Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed that the construction of a Rs 385 crore sports stadium in Mawkhanu, New Shillong Township, will be the largest in the North East.
Sangma said this during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the first artificial football turf in Umbuda, Ri-Bhoi, which is estimated to cost Rs 10.93 crore.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that the youths of the state can excel in sports, bring medals and laurels only if opportunities are provided.
“The government is committed towards this end and we will continue to invest in sports and in sports infrastructure,” he said.
The Chief Minister shared that the government is actively investing in sports infrastructure development across the state, with a current expenditure of Rs 700 crore.
Additionally, he revealed that another Rs 400 crore have been sanctioned for the upcoming financial years, emphasizing the government’s commitment to fostering sports in the region.
Sangma highlighted the significant allocation of Rs 2,800 crore in the government’s 2024-25 budget specifically for youth development initiatives.
