Shillong, Aug 24: The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) has sought intervention of the Ministry of Home Affairs over alleged road blockades and obstruction of movement on the National Highway along the Meghalaya-Assam border.
In a representation to Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, HITO president Donbok Dkhar and legal secretary Shaniah Nongrum alleged that Army personnel travelling in a civilian vehicle were obstructed on the highway despite identifying themselves.
HITO said it has submitted video evidence of the incident and urged action if allegations are substantiated.
The organisation said such blockades have become recurring whenever tension flares along the inter-state border and private groups should not be allowed to take law into their own hands or use highways to exert pressure.
Recalling a similar call for blockade in December 2024 by Kutumba Suraksha Parishad, HITO said the matter was controlled after it approached the Assam Chief Secretary.
It urged the MHA to order a time-bound inquiry, ensure real-time coordination between Assam and Meghalaya, keep national highways free from unlawful obstruction, and put in place a formal coordination mechanism.
HITO said its representation was not to aggravate tensions but to ensure disputes are resolved through constitutional means and to protect citizens, emergency services and security forces.
