The Maniwell Jahrin Award was presented to 23 student toppers of South West Khasi Hills. These include ten who excelled in various examinations held in 2020 and 13 who excelled in the examinations of 2021.
The award was given yesterday at the hall of Maharam Government Higher Secondary School, Mawkyrwat.
The awardees include Deusvobiscum Wanniang of Presbyterian Secondary School, Mawlangwir who scored 87.16 per cent in the SSLC Examinations 2020 and Deimaya Lyngdoh Marshilong of Maharam Government Higher Secondary School, Mawkyrwat who bagged 90.33 per cent in SSLC Examinations 2021.
Cabinet minister Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar who was the chief guest at the programme said the award would inspire other students to perform well in their academic career and build a spirit of competition.
He also praised the children of late Maniwell Jahrin for instituting the award in memory of their father to honour students who excelled in their various examinations.
“To excel in academic career, there are three things that are mostly needed and they are guidance and inspiration from parents in the family, proper teaching and guidance by teachings in school and learning from the surroundings around us,” Tongkhar said.
He also called upon students to imbibe good manners, respect the school that gave them knowledge and to be involved in cleanliness and protection of the environment.
South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Caramai Kharkongor was also present at the programme.
Daughter of late Maniwell Jahrin Pearly Syiem Marak also gave a speech at the award ceremony. The brief history of late Jahrin was also read out at the programme. Prayer and singing of the hymn ‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus were also the highlights of the function.
