The ICAR Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Ri-Bhoi on Saturday organised day-long training programme on integrated fish farming with special reference to backyard poultry farming on the campus of ICAR-KVK Ri-Bhoi at Umiam for farmers belonging to the district.
Speaking on the occasion, M Mokidul Islam, Principal Scientist and Head of the KVK, highlighted the initiatives of the centre in implementing the new farmer policies of the government.
He also gave a brief description of this poultry breed Vanaraja, which is a dual purpose poultry bird that performs better than local poultry in terms of egg production and also in terms of weight gain of the birds. He also informed the farmers that this breed can be reared like local poultry in their backyards with local feeding practices.
Around 20 farmers from the village were present at the event. Bankitkupar Mukhim gave an elaborate and thorough lecture on how to gain maximum benefits through integrated fish farming by incorporating different kinds of livestock and crops with fisheries that will minimise the cost of production and maximise profit. He also gave an elaborate lecture on how to manage ponds, especially during the time when fish diseases occur.
During that programme, 400 numbers of improved poultry breed Vanaraja were distributed to the farmers along with 16kg of mineral mixture for the benefit of the farmers.
