A field day on HYV of Paddy var TRC 2014-8 was held at Thadnongiaw, a village adopted by the KVK-Ri Bhoi, ICAR, under its NICRA project today.
The programme was conducted to show the performance of paddy variety which is having non-lodging and non-shattering property, found to be suitable for cultivation under lower hills under moderate drought stress situations.
The field day was attended by 55 farmers and SMS, SRF-NICRA from the KVK alongwith 16 B.Sc. Agri final year RAWE (Rural Agricultural Work Experience) students from CAU (I), Kydemkulai.
Farmers were advised to take up more HYVs of different crops including pulses like lentil, pea, blackgram etc after harvest of paddy to increase the cropping intensity.
The cultivation package and other practices were explained to farmers and students by Dr. Meghna Sarma, SMS (Agronomy) while Eliza Syiemlieh, SMS (Home Science) explained in local language to the farmers about taking up HYVs in their fields for large scale adoption for improvement of livelihood of farming community.
About 10 sprayers were distributed under Custom Hiring Centre in the NICRA adopted village.
The KVK said farmer were happy with the performance of the crop which is expected to get good yield in “TRC-2014-8” as compared to local traditional variety ‘Mandri’ and the neighbouring farmers were motivated after seeing the success of the crop.
