The South West Khasi Hills unit of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) has opposed to recommendations of the Assembly’s environment committee on the uranium site in the district.
The committee had recommended, in its recent report tabled during the recent autumn session, that the three uranium test mine pits in the Nongbah-Jynrin and Domiasiat areas be declared a restricted area and that a police outpost be set up in Wahkaji to enforce the restriction.
“The KSU does not agree with the recommendations and these seem like an attempt to prevent independent groups from going and visiting those areas,” KSU unit President Forwardman Nongrem said today. “This will do no good but is seen as an effort to silence the voice of the people.”
On the recommendation of the Assembly committee to set up a police outpost in the area, the KSU said, “What illegal activities have the people of the area done that there is a necessity to set up a police outpost?”
