The Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) has alleged that the Assam government has ‘forcefully’ appointed a headman from the Karbi community in Lakaroi village, which falls under the jurisdiction of Meghalaya.
The western zone of the JNC today met with Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) Chief Executive Member Thombor Shiwat with a complaint and urged the district council to take up the sensitive matter.
Zonal president Hamehi Bamon said Lakaroi falls under the Dorbar Pyllun Lapangap in West Jaiñtia Hills district. He said a significant number of residents in the village belong to the Karbi community, and their documentation, including voter IDs, are issued by the Dorbar Shnong Lapangap.
Alarmingly, these individuals are reportedly transferring their documents to Assam without the JHADC’s consent, he said.
The JNC has urged the district council to promptly remove the headman, as Lakaroi village is not part of Assam.
Shiwat assured the organisation that immediate action would be taken against anyone violating JHADC regulations. Bamon emphasised that if the JHADC fails to uphold its commitment, they will not remain silent.
