Shillong, Oct 11: More than 400 farmers, were present at the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam during the awareness programme on the, “Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhanya Krishi Yojana (PM-DDKY)”.
The farmers also witness the launch of the scheme by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi today via a video conferencing.
Prime Minister, Modi stressed that farmers in the country should work with the sense of convergence, co-operation and competition.
He also emphasized that with the hard work of the farmers the nation has today become one of the highest milk producing countries.
He further said that this scheme will have maximum implementation the local levels.
In his welcome address, Dr. Samarendra Hazarika, Director, ICAR RC NEH, Umiam highlighted that the aim of this scheme is to enhance productivity, promote crop diversification, improved irrigation and storage.
Dr. Hazarika informed that out of 100 districts all over India, West Jaintia Hills district has been included in this scheme.
He added that this scheme is a convergence of 36 schemes from 11 ministries which will benefit 1.7 crore farmers directly.
Adding further he said that this scheme will focus on fruits, fisheries, beekeeping, animal husbandry and agroforestry and not just crop agriculture.
Dr. Hazarika emphasized that this scheme will result in higher productivity, value addition in agriculture and allied sector, local livelihood creation, increase in domestic production and achieving self-reliance.
The Chief Guest during the occasion, Isynei Hinge, MDC from Umroi Constituency, KHADC, in his address urged upon the farmers to take benefit from the scheme.
He stressed that in Meghalaya some districts are doing better in agriculture than the others; such schemes concentrating on the districts will help to develop agricultural activities in the whole of Meghalaya.
Hinge urged upon the farmers to work together with scientist of ICAR so that many queries with regard to faming can be solved which will in turn enhance productivity and make agriculture sustainable.
