The Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has demanded the State government to implement its seven-point charter within 30 days to address the menace of drugs.
A mass public rally was organised by the pressure group in Motphran today following various awareness programmes held in different parts of the Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills region on the need to push the state government to take steps as part of the Drug Reduction, Elimination, and Action Mission (DREAM), which was launched last year.
HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem said that if the government fails to address the charter of demands within the set time frame, they will publicly march to the Secretariat.
Synrem said the demands were placed before the government on October 4, yet the organisation has not received any feedback from the government.
The group has not yet received a formal response from the state government regarding its demands for a special police force to deal with drug crime, more rehabilitation centres in the state, etc.
Synrem said that the state government always gives assurances to demands made, but seldom fulfils them in time.
The deadline set was decided upon by the pressure group after Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh in a letter assured that the government will address the matter.
The letter from Lyngdoh also stated that a state level meeting of the DREAM will be convened on November 14 to look into the various demands made by the HYC.
