The Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) has demanded eviction of illegal settlers from an area opposite the Fire and Emergency Station in Ïewduh.
The HYC said that the settlers are illegal using the land that falls under the jurisdiction of the Shillong Cantonment Board. The organisation said during its inspection, about 80 to 100 households are settling in the area without any permission from the board.
HYC president, Roy Kupar Synrem said, “The condition of the place is deplorable and unfit for human habitation and is an eyesore for the city of Shillong and the State as a whole.”
Synrem stated that the place is a hub of illegal activities like supply and trafficking of illicit drugs in the city and also a safe haven for illegal immigrants from other countries.
“It is shocking as to how the authority concern kept a blind eye to the existence of such an illegal settlement right in the middle of the city,” he added.
The HYC has placed a memorandum with the board to evict the illegal settlers and demolish the settlement.
