The Chokpot Area Vigilance Committee (CAVC) informed today that hundreds of fish were poisoned in the Da’reng River, famous for its diverse population of fish species and a crucial lifeline for the people of South Garo Hills.
The river provides water for drinking and agriculture to numerous villages before flowing down to Bangladesh. Unfortunately, on Saturday evening, hundreds of dead fish were found floating in the river near the Warima fish sanctuary, the CAVC said in a press release today.
According to the group’s own investigations, the mass death of fish was not due to an inevitable accident or natural event but down to one or more persons who used a toxic substance to kill the fish.
Residents who later came in touch with the water reported skin irritation.
“Such illegitimate practices not only affect the environment but also humans, so we the residents of Chokpot strongly condemn the unlawful act done by lunatic people,” CAVC president Jeshwell Marak said.
