The posting of nine Home Guards at the Khliehriat Powergrid has been extended by three months, the Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) announced today.
The JNC, which had earlier protested against the termination of the nine guards, met with representative of the Khliehriat Powergrid management, Sanatanu Das, today and it was he that revealed that following the JNC’s representation on May 1, the dismissal of the Home Guards has been paused, allowing the department further time to resolve the matter.
JNC president Sambormi Lyngdoh expressed appreciation for the department’s efforts and emphasised the importance of hiring local residents, questioning the purpose of establishing such a department if locals are not employed. He also called on the District Commandant of the Home Guards to use this three-month window to address the situation and seek solutions for the benefit of the affected staff.
Furthermore, he urged the state government to take immediate action to prevent similar issues in the future. According to the JNC, these Home Guards have been working at the Powergrid for between 10 and 15 years and will now suddenly be replaced by outsiders. Das had told the JNC on May 1 that the decision was taken based on a notification from the state government.
