Shillong, Jun 18: The Meghalaya High Court on Thursday has directed the State government to file an affidavit with regards to installation of CCTV cameras in all police stations across the state.
A division bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh, while hearing a public interest litigation filed by Kishan K Nongkynrih, directed the state to file the affidavit within four weeks.
The court specifically sought data concerning the CCTV cameras installed at Laban police station, along with information about other police stations throughout Meghalaya. The affidavit must include the locations of the cameras and details regarding the storage capacity of the footage.
The petition highlighted the alleged non-compliance with a Supreme Court ruling. The landmark judgment requires police stations to install CCTV systems at entry and exit points, lock-ups, corridors, and reception areas to enhance their operational transparency.
The matter will be heard on July 24, 2026.
