Half of the attendees at a large Trinamool Congress (TMC) rally in Mendipathar yesterday had come in from Assam, National People’s Party (NPP) spokesperson and Williamnagar MLA Marcuise N Marak claimed today.
The public meeting that featured West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee was said to have been attended by 50,000 people.
The large number of out-of-state attendees demonstrates that Banerjee and the TMC do not truly understand the demographic make-up of Meghalaya, Marak added.
“When their leaders are not even able to connect with the locals, how they think they will get a majority in the state?” he questioned. “I believe that the NPP will win an absolute majority in the state as it has delivered on the promises made with schemes like FOCUS and FOCUS+.”
On the plan of leader of the opposition Dr Mukul Sangma, of the TMC, to contest two seats at the February 27 election, Marak said that this shows that the former Chief Minister is in the danger zone as far as his career in politics is concerned. Dr Sangma had also contested from two seats in 2018 (on a Congress Party ticket) and won both.
