The Mindikgre unit of the Garo Students Union (GSU) has objected to reported hikes in the fares of private and commercial vehicles in South Garo Hills.
In a complaint to the Deputy Commissioner dated today, the pressure group said that it had received several complaints on the issue of a steep rise in transportation fares as the public looks to recover from the ill economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Following the lockdown and the imposition of Covid-19 protocols, transporters have hiked fares to double the levels they were prior. While Covid restrictions have been gradually relaxed, the cost of transportation has remained at its hiked levels.
“We have reported the matter to the officers concerned and asked them to act on the issue promptly. The high costs are posing a huge problem for people in the region to get back on their feet as most don’t have the luxury of private vehicles,” said GSU unit President, Greneth Sangma.
