Shillong, Oct 28: Social activist Angela Rangad has written to the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills to raise her concerns over what she describes as rampant environmental violations and illegal activities taking place in the Lumparing area of Shillong.
In her letter to the DC, Rangad stated that the forests in the Lumparing–Kynjat Phutbol and Madan Laban areas have been subjected to “serious destruction” over several months and years due to extensive tree felling and unchecked soil dumping.
She pointed out that, apart from the damage caused by the proposed ropeway project—on which, she said, no consultations were held with local residents—fresh cases of indiscriminate soil dumping have further endangered the fragile ecosystem.
“These forests are a lifeline not only to the surrounding localities but also serve as vital catchment areas that supply water to numerous households,” Rangad wrote in the letter today. “This indiscriminate tree felling and soil dumping not only poses risks of landslides and water contamination but also disturbs the overall ecological balance, threatening human lives and wildlife alike.”
The activist attached recent photographs showing large-scale soil dumping and urged the district administration to take immediate action against those involved. She also appealed for public announcements and newspaper notices warning residents against engaging in such unlawful activities.
Rangad reminded the authorities that these acts violate several existing orders issued by the DC’s office, along with key environmental laws such as the Environment Protection Act and the Air and Water Acts.
