Bosco Integrated Development Society (BIDS), a non-governmental organisation based in Nonshilliang Nongthymmai here, conducted an exposure visit to the Rural Resource and Training Institute at Umran, Ri-Bhoi on Wednesday.
The exposure visit aimed to provide practical, hands-on learning on vermicomposting techniques to 33 beneficiaries from six villages within Mawlai block – Nongkohlew, Umsaw Mawjynrong, Mawsiatkhnam, Umrynjah, Umphrew and Madan Mawkhat. The participants gained insights into the various stages of composting, the types of materials suitable for vermicomposting, effective pest and disease management and the diverse applications of nutrient-rich vermicompost in agriculture.
This visit was under BIDS’ ongoing project, ‘Preserving soil fertility through vermicomposting and mixed cropping’, supported by the Small Grants Programme (SGP) India.
SGP India, OP 7 is being implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) is the national host institution for coordinating and facilitating SGP in India.
The beneficiaries observed the operational aspects of a functional vermicomposting unit. This practical exposure is expected to be instrumental in enabling them to implement sustainable vermicomposting practices within their own communities, thereby enhancing organic waste management and promoting environmentally friendly agricultural techniques, a press release from BIDS stated.
