On the appointment of political appointees to head various committees and other bodies in the state, Trinamool Congress leader George B Lyngdoh has questioned whether the expenditure incurred generates any benefit for Meghalaya.
Practically every government rewards its allies with plum sinecures in a variety of quangos and advisory roles and the current administration is no different.
Even though Meghalaya needs extra hands to run the administration, on the flipside, if unnecessary expenditure is incurred then the government should be judicious enough to ensure that there is a balance of both, Lyngdoh, a former legislator, said.
“Any board, committee or commissions on which the government spends have a huge responsibility to fulfil. They must contribute towards governance and contribute towards the growth of society and state,” he maintained. “If there are people who can actually contribute to the state, then their appointment is at the discretion of the state. The government must make judicious and responsible decisions when it comes to such appointments and appointees.”
