Several Garo Hills organisations have written to the West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police to call for the removal of the officer in charge of Tikrikilla police station over his handling of a recent murder case that has shocked the region.
The murder in question is that of Pirot R Marak and the chief suspects are his wife, two brothers-in-law and the wife’s supposed lover.
Marak was believed to have been killed in April but his family members filed a police complaint only in May. It then took more than a month before his body was exhumed by the authorities for an autopsy that revealed an unnatural death due to strangulation.
This month-long delay in exhuming the body “is unacceptable and clearly shows negligence” on the part of the police and “has damaged public confidence in the police, eroded public trust and has caused a delay in securing justice.
The NGOs also faulted the police over certain other procedural matters regarding the case diary (CD), etc.
Candlelight vigil for murder victim
A solemn candlelight vigil was held at Renggigre Playground in Raksamgre, demanding justice for the late Pirot R Marak, whose post-mortem report revealed a violent and unnatural death due to strangulation.
The event, attended by family members, clan representatives and various pressure groups, called for swift justice and accountability. Four individuals, including Pirot’s wife Nennen R Marak and her relatives, have been arrested in connection with the case.
The vigil was a united effort by the bereaved family, Raksam Mahari (clan), and local organisations to ensure that the culprits are held accountable.
