Shillong, Sep 8: Cannabis plants growing inside an abandoned plot in the heart of Laitumkhrah market were today destroyed by authorities.
The plot, surrounded by a concrete wall and a locked iron gate, is located in the busy market locality. Inside, several lush cannabis plants were found standing amid garbage. Locals had alleged the spot had become a safe haven for drug users, particularly after dark.
Locals had flagged that while cannabis plants are targeted for destruction in remote areas, they were growing abundantly in the middle of Laitumkhrah, with authorities turning a blind eye.
Under NDPS Act, cultivation of cannabis can attract up to 10 years jail and Rs 1 lakh fine, even for a single plant.
