Unscrupulous fraudsters are looking to take advantage of the public during these difficult Covid-19 times by promising the gullible lakhs of rupees in aid, Meghalaya police warned today.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Sylvester Nongtnger, issued a press release to this effect today, asking citizens to be vigilant and not fall prey to such scams.
Of two examples shared by Nongtnger, one, dubbed the Covid-19 Relief Fund, promises money from the “Federal Government” on answering a few questions. Another tells recipients of the message that they have an opportunity to benefit up to Rs 1 lakh through Covid-19 financial aid. The fraudsters will then invariably attempt to gain access to bank details from the victims.
Another advisory also came yesterday against an account number (446810110012495) with IFSC code BKID0006078 under the Bank of India. Police said the account holder under ‘Cipla Foundation Ltd’ is being used for financial cyber frauds in the name of medicines for remedy of COVID-19.
An appeal was sent out to the public not to fall prey to gimmicks by fraudsters.
