The EK Mawlong Memorial Football Trophy, organised by the Mawlasnai Football Association in honour of the late EK Mawlong, a former Chief Minister of Meghalaya, commenced today.
The opening ceremony was held at the Mawlasnai football ground. Mawlong, who was also formerly Umroi MLA, was remembered for his contributions to the welfare of the people.
Present on the occasion was Abhijit Kro, a member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, one of Mawlong’s children and senior journalist Andrew Lyngdoh, retired former footballer Eugeneson Lyngdoh and other prominent personalities of Ri-Bhoi.
The opening match was a compelling contest between Hills United of Diphu in Assam and Khliehmawlieh from West Khasi Hills. The thrilling game ended in 3-3 but, in the subsequent tiebreaker, Hills United emerged 4-2 victors.
