The Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP) has set two weeks time for authorities to act on illegal trade of timber and its products.
The Khliehriat circle of the FKJGP led by its president Mishal Chyrmang and vice president of Jaiñtia Hills zone Marhok Marboh met with the Chief Forest Officer (CFO) of the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) and Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Jaiñtia Hills Territorial Division with the demand.
According to the organisation, numerous complaints have been received from the people of the region over illegal supply of timber outside the state that has led to increase in price of timber meant for house construction.
The FKJGP leaders said there is rampant illegal supply of timber products from saw mills to Assam who could buy them at a higher price.
Stating that there is utter disregard for law from the fact that several truckloads of wooden logs are transported illegally even through the check points.
Further, the FKJGP said such illegality is leading to depletion of forest cover and valuable trees in the district.
The organisation said if the two concerned authorities fail to act, they would conduct their own check.
