The First Lady of Meghalaya, Neelam Misra, visited the vocational training centre of 101 Area at Happy Valley here yesterday.
Mishra said the rich tradition of loin loom weaving is prevalent only in Northeastern region now. “We must put in concerted effort in its preservation and encourage local weavers to carry it forward,” she said.
She stressed on empowering women weavers and said loin weaving guarantees socioeconomic development of the people. “The traditional products of local weavers of the region must go from local to global and must be the fashion statement.”
A documentary on loin loom weaving conceptualised by the First Lady was also screened on the occasion.
Sunitha Panchanathan, Zonal President, Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) 101 Area was also present during the visit.
