Combating the menace of drugs will be impossible when corruption is rampant, Voice of the People Party (VPP) spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh has said.
Expressing concern over the rampant drug use in the state, Myrboh told Highland Post that the state should simultaneously fight drugs and corruption.
“What is frightening is that when corruption is rampant the tackling of drug menace becomes next to impossible. I believe that corruption, drug trafficking, and crimes go hand in hand,” he said.
He said once people are deep into corruption, then ethics and values no longer matter, but what matters to them is money, and the fight against this menace becomes very difficult.
“I believe in fighting the drug menace; we also need to fight corruption. The citizen has to be extra vigilant because, through this illicit business, anyone could be bribed as there is lots of money,” he opined.
He also questioned why there has been no identification and arrest of the kingpins and main drug suppliers, which could be more meaningful in tackling this problem.
He also said that there should be transparency and accountability in the disposal of the narcotics seized. “If the government is serious about tackling this then it has to tackle the supply. It has to take action and be well prepared because this menace is slowly consuming our society.
“This is what we keep saying that the price of corruption is not limited, and its implications far-reaching beyond the capacity to understand,” he added.
