Women’s College, Shillong and the Meghalaya Social Development Society (MSDS) organised PEP (People Education Programme) to create awareness on various schemes of the central and state governments, for students especially those of the last semester at Women’s College on March 11. The programme was sponsored by Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Shillong.
Speaking as the chief guest, Women’s College principal Dr. Ratnadeep Roy stated that the college have been conducting training on bakery, photography etc. in which the purpose of today’s programme is an opportunity for those students on completion of their studies, they can apply for various schemes like home stay, hostel for generating self -employment stating that some students may start a business where they can provide job to others.
While stating the importance of upgradation of knowledge and skills for sustainable growth of themselves and their works, Dr. Roy hopes that different departments like KVIC, MSME, KVIB and banking institutions will provide guidance and handholding support for proper implementation of their ideas for setting up an enterprise.
MSME assistant director R Nongbri in his speech as guest of honour gave a brief explanation of the various schemes that MSME provided to the startup entrepreneurs ranging from marketing, branding to exhibitions or trade fairs in and outside the state in which the entrepreneurs get free travelling and borne all expenses.
He also stressed on the scheme that was launched by the Prime Minister of India last year, which is known as PM Viswakarma in which the scheme is applicable only to those traditional hand-made products that passed on from generation to generation like handloom, handicraft, blacksmith, goldsmith, hair cutting and other 18 varieties of trades. He called upon the students to have a stable mind for proper growth and requested them to disseminate the information to those who are interested in starting a new venture.
Others who spoke on this occasion included Meghalaya Khadi and Village Industries Board (MKVIB) Executive Officer S R Mylliemngap, KVIC Junior Executive Modon Lyngdoh, United Bank of India (Laitumkhrah) Deputy Branch Head Banshanborlang Chyne, Prof. Ayushman Dutta and MSDS President Albinus Nongkynrih. The programme was presided over by Dr. Parijat Biswas.
Prior to the main event, there were competitions on debate, essay, elocution in which the winners in the debate were Soring Vashum for the motion from English Department and Lamboineng Kipgen against the motion from Political Science Department.
In the essay competition, Lamboineng Kipgen won the first prize from the Political Science Department and Nibia Oinam bagged the second position from Political Science Department and the third position went to Joyjoy N. Kuki from Sociology Department. In the elocution competition, Latasha R. Marak was adjudged as best elocutionist from the Sociology Department.
Others present at the function included officials and staff of KVIC, MKVIB, banks, Women’s College vice principal Dr. Mayashree B. Das, teachers, and students.
