Shillong, Jun 19: The Meghalaya State Zoo has achieved success in breeding stump-tailed macaque, a species listed as “vulnerable” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
Authorities said the newborn macaque is in good health, under the watchful eye of the zoo’s veterinary team, while staying with its mother and troop.
The breeding pair of stump-tailed macaques was brought from Aizawl Zoological Park in Mizoram, under an animal exchange programme.
The successful birth highlights the species’ adaptation to its new environment and reflects the quality of animal care, veterinary support, and scientific management at the zoo, officials said.
PCCF (Wildlife & Biodiversity) & Chief Wildlife Warden D. Sathiyan described the event as an encouraging result arising out of continuous efforts towards wildlife conservation in the state.
He stated that the success demonstrates Meghalaya’s commitment to scientific zoo management and conservation of threatened species, while also creating greater public awareness about the importance of modern zoological institutions in protecting endangered and threatened species for future generations.
