In a great loss to farmers of a village in the Ranikor area of South West Khasi Hills, a herd of wild elephants destroyed plantations and homes.
According to the Ranikor Area Farmers Association (RAFA), yesterday a herd of wild elephants destroyed pineapples, bananas and other crops in the area.
This has been a regular occurrence and RAFA had also complained about similar cases in 2023 to wildlife and district administration officials but to no avail.
RAFA also asked the Chief Minister to come and witness the damage caused for himself in order to understand the plight of rural folk afflicted by human-elephant conflict rather than making “big statements” without understanding the ground reality. It is not clear what statements RAFA is referring to but last year the CM did talk about a plan to create elephant corridors in the state linking Assam to Bangladesh and to use these for eco-tourism.
