The East Jaintia Hills district administration has passed an order under Section 163 of the BNSS to forestall any attempt to hold the contentious cow yatra in the district.
A Hindu group wants the cow declared as the “nation’s mother” and to put an end to cow slaughter. In this vein, they had planned to hold a rally in the state capital on October 2. However, the group’s leaders were prohibited from flying from Agartala to Shillong Airport in Umroi yesterday due to fears that its members presence and the planned rally would incite tensions within members of society.
The East Jaintia Hills District Magistrate has also passed a prohibitory order banning the assembly of five or more persons in the district for a rally or procession and the movement of an assembly of five or more persons in a rally or procession. However, this order does not apply to any religious procession that has sought permission from the authorities.
