A 21-year old girl was reunited with her family five years after she was duped by a woman to provide her with the best educational facilities when she was 16 years old.
The girl (name withheld) was taken by one Wancy Dorphang of Umtrai village in Ri Bhoi district to Pune in 2016 with a promise made to her parents that she will be sent to the best educational institutions for studies there.
However, things turned out otherwise as the family lost contact with their child. With no success in tracing the girl after a first FIR was lodged the case was then taken up by the Nongpoh Women Police Station.
The uncle of the girl told reporters today that his niece was locked inside one house in Pune for five years and was not allowed to contact the family.
He said Hynñiewtrep Youth Council, Umden circle took the initiative to seek immediate intervention of the Ri Bhoi Superintendent of Police and Deputy Commissioner.
On October 28, 2021 Ri Bhoi District Police led by SI PK Lyngdoh, SI B Khymdeit, WPC O Jala and Donbok Maiong President of the HYC Umden Circle in collaboration with the Maharashtra police rescued the girl and an emotional reunion took place yesterday at Byrnihat Police Outpost.
Meanwhile, police has sent out to Dorphang to appear before police for questioning.
