The A’chik State People’s Front (ASPF) has written to Health and Family Welfare Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh accusing a government doctor of negligence, namely that the doctor forgot to remove a bandage inside a patient’s abdomen during surgery.
The ASPF named the doctors as Suzie Paul Francis, a surgeon at Jengjal Subdivisional Hospital. The patient was identified as Mensila N Marak from Lower Nengsa in North Garo Hills.
According to the letter, on January 29, 2024, Marak was admitted to the hospital for a caesarean section. During the procedure the doctor, it is alleged, left the bandage inside the woman’s abdomen, which later caused her “significant pain and discomfort” while also posing a “severe health threat”.
The ASPF wants the Health Department to investigate and hold Dr Francis accountable.
The organisation attached medical reports for scans undertaken by Marak in June. One refers to the likelihood of “gossypiboma”, a technical term for surgical complications resulting from foreign materials from surgery that are accidentally left inside a patient’s body.
