Police have arrested four men, including two the authorities say are members of the Hynñiewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM), over a bid to extort Rs 10 lakh from a man in Shillong.
On August 24 a complaint was lodged at Madanrting police station that the target had been contacted on August 8 by an unknown male individual demanding a sum of Rs 10 lakh.
The complainant did not comply despite several more attempts by the extortionist.
Then, on the evening of August 20, the extortionist and two accomplices “criminally trespassed” onto the property of the complainant with the intent of getting the money they wanted. As the target was not at home, they proceeded to intimidate his daughter.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger today informed that, following an investigation, four suspects have been arrested in connection with the crime. The two supposed HNYM members have been identified as Garnett Gedian Khongwir (30) and Kyshanbor Lyngdoh (38), The other two are Thounaujam David Singh (41) and Narendra Kabrambam (29).
Further investigations are ongoing.
