The Covid-19 Transport Service was launched in Nongpoh today by Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah.
The project was initiated by the State Consultative Committee on Covid-19 and supported by the Nongpoh Town Committee and Nongpoh Area Maxi Cab Owners and Drivers Association.
Others present on the occasion was member of the State Consultative Committee, Naba Bhatacharjee, chairman of Nongpoh Town Committee, CB Syiem, secretary Rayonald Kharkamni and the leaders of the Nongpoh Area Maxi Cab Owners and Drivers Association.
The new service is meant to ease in ferrying Covid patients to Corona Care Centres or for any other medical treatment required by coronavirus patients.
Five maxi-cabs have been hired by the consultative committee thus far.
“As the government has imposed a total lockdown to take preventive measures from the sharp rise of Covid-19, the transport service was launched to cater the needs of the infected patients,” said Bhatacharjee.
Meanwhile, Kurbah also lauded the initiative, saying, “This is the time that we have to come together and work together to fight the sharp surge of Covid-19 and if all people extend their support by strictly following all the government protocols, there is no doubt that we can overcome Covid-19 with the eventual possibility of withdrawing the total lockdown”.
