The fatality rate from Covid-19 in Meghalaya crossed the 1 percent milestone, with two more deaths related to the disease reported today.
Ganga Maya Chetri (66), of Happy Valley, Shillong, was admitted to NEIGRIHMS on November 22 and passed away on December 13 of refractory shock with Covid-19 pneumonia, interstitial lung disease, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and hypothyroidism.
Allen T Sangma (55), of Bajengdoba, became only the second Covid fatality in North Garo Hills. He was admitted to Tura Civil Hospital on December 8 and passed away on December 12. Cause of death was upper gastrointestinal bleeding with chronic gastric ulcer and Covid-19.
The statewide fatality rate is now at 1.0046 percent. The total number of Covid-related deaths is now 130, with 106 in East Khasi Hills. Nineteen deaths from the disease have been reported this month alone.
Meanwhile, there were 75 new infections recorded today and 50 recoveries.
Of the new cases 51 were in East Khasi Hills, 21 in Ri-Bhoi and three in West Garo Hills.
Seven of these were health workers – four in East Khasi Hills and three in West Garo Hills. Two police personnel and seven armed forces/paramilitaries tested positive in East Khasi Hills. There were also several cases in various clusters, including four in Madanrting, three in Laban, two in Anjalee and two in Nongmynsong (all East Khasi Hills) and 11 in Saiden, six in Baridua, two in Umling and one each in NESAC and Umbir (all Ri-Bhoi).
The recoveries were divided between East Khasi Hills (37), West Garo Hills (nine), South West Garo Hills (two) and East Jaiñtia Hills (two).
In all, Meghalaya has had 12,941 Covid-19 cases, of which 753 are active, 12,058 have recovered and 130 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has dropped to 93.18 percent.
The Health Department also informed that around 1,000 Covid-19 tests were carried out in the past 24 hours.
