Nongpoh, Oct 24: In order to increase safety for other drivers, police in Ri-Bhoi have banned parking along National Highway 6 between Jorabat and Byrnihat.
The district police are in the midst of a crackdown on unsafe practices along the highway in order to improve safety and reduce accidents.
Parking on the highway obstructs other vehicles, reduces visibility and this can lead to fatal accidents.
Speaking to reporters, Superintendent of Police VS Rathore issued a stern warning that all vehicles, particularly trucks, are now strictly prohibited from parking along the stretch from Byrnihat to Jorabat. Any vehicle found defying this order will be fined in accordance with legal provisions.
He also warned dhaba and hotel owners not to allow vehicles to park improperly near their establishments along the roadside. If violations continue, fines will be imposed not only on the vehicle owners but also on the establishments themselves, and the police – using magisterial powers – may even order closure of such dhabas or hotels, he added.
“This intensified enforcement against traffic law violators stems from our concern over the many tragic incidents that have occurred along this highway. Since we started these strict measures, the number of accidents and mishaps has significantly declined. To prevent further loss of life, drivers must strictly adhere to traffic rules to avoid accidents or penalties,” said Rathore.
Meanwhile, district police conducted an intensive checking and inspection drive between Byrnihat and Jorabat, led by Rathore, with several fines issued for speeding, improper parking, failure to wear helmets or seatbelts, etc.
Rathore explained that the crackdown was initiated following several complaints from the public, including from officials and representatives, about the growing problem of vehicles being parked haphazardly, causing congestion and accidents along the highway.
