Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today launched the project to set up an artificial football turf at Riangdo Playground in West Khasi Hills.
The project has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore and it should be complete in 18 months.
Other dignitaries present on the occasion were Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Shakliar Warjri, Mawshynrut MLA Methodius Dkhar and senior civil servants.
The CM praised his own government for undertaking more stadiums and other infrastructure in the last five years “than what was made in the last 45 years put together”.
He also took a dig at past governments for not improving this particular ground despite its importance in the sports scene of Riangdo.
He also commended the Meghalaya boys’ football team, which won gold at the Khelo India Youth Games 2024 earlier this week and added that West Khasi Hills could one day host the Meghalaya Games if its infrastructure is of a suitable standard.
