The political unrest in Bangladesh is costing the Meghalaya government at least Rs 20 lakh a day in revenue as cross-border trade has been suspended.
The two most exported items from Meghalaya to Bangladesh are limestone and stone chips. Usually around 600 trucks enter the neighbouring country every day through the various land ports in the state.
The current situation in Bangladesh has led to the suspension of cross-border transportation services.
Exporters say that hundreds of trucks that had lined up to enter through Dawki and Tamabil are stranded. The freezing of trade has had consequences further up the supply chain with quarry owners and their workers now facing uncertainty too.
According to Michael Myrchiang of the War Jaintia Limestone, Boulder Stone Exporters and Miners Association, Meghalaya is losing around Rs 20 lakh of revenue daily through challans.
