On the occasion of one year since the eruption of violence in Manipur, the Shillong and Ri-Bhoi units of the Conference of Religious India (CRI) organised candlelight rosary processions in 13 different locations in East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi on Friday.
Coinciding with May, a month revered by Catholics in honour of the Virgin Mary, the decision was made to conduct these candlelight rosary processions at 5:30pm.
In East Khasi Hills, the eight designated locations were Laitumkhrah, Nongthymmai, Mawlai, Upper Shillong, Umpling, Mawroh, Jongksha and Sohra, while in Ri-Bhoi, the five selected sites comprised Nongpoh, Umbir, Mawshohroh, Umsning and Umroi.
There was a huge turnout for the event at every location, with hundreds of faithful youths joining the Catholic religious.
The organisers, Br Sunil Britto, Sr Teresa Kamasuan and Fr Arul Soosai, expressed great joy with the various hosting centres that did an exemplary job organising the event in the various locations. They expressed that their intention was to gather in solidarity, recalling the darkness that engulfs our Manipur brethren. They prayed with candlelight, realising it is a time of uncertainty and darkness but prayed with the hope for peace.
