Shillong, Oct 9: A capacity building programme on ‘ICAR–IIHR Technologies for Production of Horticultural Crops in the NEH Region’ was successfully organized at Marapara village, Dalu Block, West Garo Hills today.
The programme was jointly organized by ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), West Garo Hills and the Department of Horticulture, North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Tura Campus, in collaboration with ICAR–Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Hessaraghatta, Bengaluru.
The event aimed to enhance the technical knowledge and capacity of local farmers on the latest horticultural technologies developed by ICAR–IIHR, thereby improving productivity, nutritional security and livelihoods in the region.
A total of 56 Garo farmers, predominantly women, actively participated in the programme. As part of the initiative, the farmers received Arka Seed Kits, Arka Banana Special, and Arka Citrus Special, sponsored by ICAR–IIHR, Bengaluru.
The technical session covered the importance and practical application of IIHR-developed technologies and their potential to boost horticultural productivity in the region. Speakers emphasised on the significance of adopting these innovations, particularly in banana and citrus cultivation, to enhance fruit quality and farm income.
Farmers were also encouraged to link technology adoption with environmental stewardship for holistic farm development.
