An under construction two storey health centre in Tura is showing signs of serious wear and tear, prompting concern and calls for action against the contractor.
The floor of the building has crumbled in places. The location of the centre is opposite the ill-fated PA Sangma Sports Complex, which recently saw a severe landslide causing damage to the football ground.
An inspection was conducted by the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills and executive members of the New Tura Development Forum, wherein it became evident that the quality of work done on the construction is highly disappointing.
Today, social activist Cherian Momin wrote to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma warning that the deterioration “poses significant risks to the safety and well-being of the patients and staff who will rely on this health centre.”
He called on the CM to take immediate action to “rectify the substandard construction” and listed a three-point plan in this regard, namely to deploy qualified inspectors to assess the deficiencies and initiate immediate repairs, hold the contractor accountable through a thorough inquiry, and strengthen oversight and monitoring to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
